Buckingham Palace announced his passing today at noon: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh"

After a prolonged illness last month that involved surgery related to a pre-existing heart condition and a 28-day stay in the hospital, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, has died at age 99.

An announcement posted at noon on the Royal Family's website reads: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

The Duke of Edinburgh was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark in Corfu in 1921 to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. He and Princess Elizabeth met when they were children, and began corresponding as teenagers, when he enlisted at age 18 in the British Royal Navy. They were married in November 1947 and had four children together: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.
