Long before she won Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray found her purpose. Now, she’s using her platform to amplify a cause close to her heart: providing education and hope to marginalised communities
Catriona Gray found her purpose in Tondo, Manila’s Smokey Mountain, where children navigate a world far removed from the city. Long before she stepped into the spotlight as Miss Universe 2018, she was drawn to this community—a network of narrow streets and makeshift homes, shadowed by stark realities. Here, she saw an urgent need for action. Gray’s journey was never just about the title; it was about using the platform to bring visibility to a cause that had taken root in her heart: the belief that education could be a bridge to new possibilities.
Gray’s commitment to Young Focus, a grassroots organisation working to provide access to education in Smokey Mountain, began years before she wore the crown. Officially launching in 2008, the initiative offers children a foothold in an uncertain world, giving them opportunities they might never otherwise have had. Gray first volunteered with them in 2016, drawn to their vision of transforming lives through education. She recalls walking through the community on her first visit, impacted by seeing families’ daily struggles alongside their quiet hope for something more. “I realised then,” she reflects, “that education isn’t just a dream here—it’s a lifeline.”

As her relationship with Young Focus grew, Gray saw the profound impact education could have. It was a chance to reframe futures. Her involvement deepened after winning the Miss Universe title, which gave her a larger platform to amplify the cause she believed in. But even with the visibility that came with the crown, Gray knew that real change required more than symbolic gestures. For her, it meant showing up consistently and building something lasting.

Now, Gray is preparing for the Legacy Ball, an event she designed to support Young Focus on a larger scale. It will blend music, fashion, and the stories of those whose lives have been reshaped by education. She sees the fundraiser as a celebration, yes, but also a powerful reminder of the work still to be done. “This is more than an event,” she explains. “It’s a movement to raise not only funds but also awareness. It’s a way of reaching out to more people who can become part of this vision.”
