Discover life lessons from Olympic pole vaulter EJ Obiena on resilience, leadership, and purpose
Once he releases his grip on the pole, EJ Obiena vaults himself into the air, and as his body clears the bar, he braces himself for the exhilarating rush of possibilities waiting to unfold. In pole vaulting, mere millimetres can determine the difference between victory and defeat, and so competing at the highest levels of the sport requires not just strength of body, but also strength of mind and spirit. Obiena knows this full well, as his resilience and mental fortitude have continually defied expectations, inspiring many others along the way.
Born Ernest John Obiena, the Filipino pole vaulter has become a prominent figure in the sport, not just in the Philippines but on the international stage. The first Filipino to qualify for the pole vault event at the Olympics, he has broken multiple Asian records and is now counted among the world’s elite, often competing alongside top-tier pole vaulters like Armand Duplantis.
Obiena’s journey to success hasn’t been easy; he has faced various challenges—including funding issues, injuries, and training setbacks. Despite these obstacles, he has remained focused, making his unbreakable spirit as much a source of inspiration as his athletic achievements.
Embrace the unknown: Unexpected paths can lead to greatness
At just 28, Obiena has already earned his place among the world’s best in pole vaulting. His historic 2023 season saw him winning his third consecutive Southeast Asian Games title, securing gold at the Asian Championships, and taking home the Philippines’ first-ever Asian Games gold medal in pole vaulting, and rising to the top three slot in the world rankings. He also cemented his name in the history books by becoming the first Asian to join the sport’s exclusive six-metre club. “Being the first Asian to jump over six metres—that’s something nobody could take away from me,” he says.
