The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have reportedly bought their European getaway in an exclusive estate—dubbed ‘The Hamptons of Portugal’—where George Clooney, Paris Hilton and the prince’s cousin Princess Eugenie are said to also own property

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have reportedly bought a US$4.7 million luxury getaway at the exclusive CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club in Melides, Portugal, located by the Atlantic coast around 130 kilometres south of the capital Lisbon, in an area known as “the Hamptons of Portugal”.

The royal couple are said to have snapped up one of CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club’s 300 soon-to-be-built residences. They’ll have plenty of famous neighbours: property owners at the luxury resort reportedly include Paris Hilton, Prince Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie, as well as George Clooney. The co-founder of the Clooney’s tequila company Casamigos, Mike Meldman, is the developer behind the property.

CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club is described as a members-only golf and ocean club that offers luxurious resort living and custom homes; it is “the ideal luxury getaway for families seeking an authentic, lifestyle-focused coastal residential community”. Spread across 722 acres, the property offers amenities like a golf course designed by famed architect Tom Fazio, a beach club, an equestrian centre, fitness and spa facilities and an organic farm.

The pair currently live in an 18,000 sq ft, 16-bedroom, nine-bathroom estate in Montecito, California, which includes features like a swimming pool, tennis court, chicken coop and rose gardens, as well as a sauna, gym, arcade and five-car garage.

Here, we take a look at the designs of their soon-to-be-constructed luxury European digs.

The design takes inspiration from the local Alentejo style of architecture, which entails building with local materials with the goal of creating a sense of connection with the land. It combines old-world details with a modern twist “appropriate for luxury resort living”.
