The project merges L’Oréal’s unparalleled expertise in cosmetic science with IBM’s cutting-edge generative AI technology to support L’Oréal’s goal of sourcing most product formulas from bio-sourced materials and circular economy by 2030. The formulation foundation model is believed to be a first of its kind in the industry, redefining AI innovation at the intersection of beauty, chemistry and technology.

“This partnership will extend the speed and scale of our innovation and reformulation pipeline, with products always reaching higher standards of inclusivity, sustainability, and personalisation,” L’Oréal Research & Innovation Head of Innovation Métiers & Product Development Stéphane Ortiz says.

The AI foundation model will analyse formulations and component data to: speed up new product development, help reformulate existing cosmetics and optimise production processes. It will also improve the company’s understanding of renewable ingredients and support L’Oréal's 4,000 researchers worldwide.

IBM Consulting will assist L’Oréal in reshaping its formulation discovery process. The model aims to help L’Oréal build more sustainable product lines with greater inclusivity and personalisation for consumers globally.
