Rajo Laurel Reveals 3 Spring Summer 2021 Collections
“The past year required a long pause. In a time of uncertainty, I looked inward and meditated on my body of work and process. I approached the making of our Spring-Summer 2021 collections with yearning, hope, and vigour,” designer Rajo Laurel shared. This rings true as Laurel releases three new collections that provide what people need the most this very day—comfort and luxury.
"Each collection is divided into four volumes, exploring different themes and stories," he said.
These new collections all evoke a uniqueness that Laurel often creates: anew for House of Laurel, Re-Edition from RAJO, and his new homeware line Objects*.
Rajo!
With "Re-Edition", a collection for his line, Rajo! is something quite different as it explores the concept of "recirculation". "Akin to assemblage, Re-Edition is a line of garments [that have been] taken apart and reconstructed" Laurel shares. He and his team "took apart, reworked, and breathed a new life into garments from [their] design archives".
With this collection, the designer continues to prove his long-running advocacy for fashion sustainability. He imparted that "recirculation has always been deeply ingrained in our process at House of Laurel and Rajo!. For years, we’ve offered services like repairs and re-orders to our clientele. We’re putting this practice [at] the forefront as we think that producer responsibility should be highlighted during these times. We pride ourselves on well-thought-out processes and design. To me and my team, good design is and should always be sustainable".
House Of Laurel
The S/S 2021 collection for House of Laurel, his demi-couture line is titled "anew". It is a selection of neutral-coloured garments that range from bold to relaxed and can be donned every day.
He goes on to share more about the woman he designs for: "My clientele has remained constant over the years—strong, independent, and intelligent individuals that in turn have inspired the garments and collections I produce. Our S/S21 release paints our clientele in a different light, with a type of elegance that emphasizes comfort, a luxury that is silent but potent," he says.
Objects*
Lastly, for his new curated homeware line "Objects*", he has both table-wear and table-cloths from Rajo Home such as placemats and table runners which were made and designed by Laurel. He shared, "Over the years, I’ve honed my eye in collecting and curating fabrics, art, homeware, and the like. Rajo Home’s table-clothes—placemats, table runners, and more—are in collaboration with my partner, Nix, as we are fond of embellishing our personal space with tablescapes and special adornments. We made use of fabrics from my archive, collected over time. We are excited to share this project with our clients, especially in a time where the importance of personal space is evermore felt."
He also shared how he began to collect the items like bowls, plates and such initially for his personal space from all his trips to Japan, until the designer began to receive numerous inquiries about his selections. This eventually led him to this collection, even including books that were found from his recent travel adventures. "[The items are] carefully selected for the homes of those I deeply care about," Laurel imparted.
