3 Reasons Mortlach Should Be A Part Of Your Holiday Celebrations
A slow drink, one that can be enjoyed and savoured: this is what Mortlach presents to us this Christmas season.
A true testament to quality, Mortlach is "Whisky's Best Kept Secret". Known as the "Beast of Dufftown", this Scottish usquebaugh is known to be light-bodied yet distinctive, with rich notes and a bold flavour profile. Its distillation process is just as elaborate. Having been perfected by Dr. Alexander Cowie in 1896, the process has remained unchanged for over two centuries. Its precision is unmatched: it is distilled exactly 2.81 times in six copper stills of completely different shapes. The whisky then passes through a tangle of copper pipes that have been turned at exact angles. The specificity of this process is fiendishly complex, yet these steps are part and parcel of what make Mortlach so distinctive up to this day.
This Christmas season, Mortlach releases a range of whiskies that give us more reasons to celebrate — three, to be exact.
Mortlach 12 Years Old: The Wee Witchie
The Wee Witchie, named after the smallest and yet, the most vital of Mortlach's stills, is a 12-year-old single malt that has been matured in both European and American oaks. This process gives the whisky a rich and robust character that is accentuated by a deep amber shade. A single whiff will remind you of cosy oak tones, reminiscent of warm wood shavings. Its flavour profile takes one on a fantastic journey that starts at stone fruit elements, moving on towards honey, before ending with cooked fruits. This is the perfect whisky to indulge in this time of the year and during early autumn.

Mortlach 16 Years Old: The Distiller’s Pride
The Mortlach 16 is similar in colour to the Mortlach 12. However, unlike its feisty younger sibling, the Mortlach 16 comes with a different character, one that is both sweet and shy. Yet, its richness is undisputed as an initial gulp will testify — it opens the drinker up to the scent of orchard fruits, accompanied by earthy notes and honeyed sweetness. There will be hints of toffee, dried apricots, and honey, which will surely resonate with the cosiness of the season.
Mortlach 20 Years Old: Cowie’s Blue Seal
The Mortlach 20 is one that would make even Dr Alexander proud. It's two decades in the making and a testament to what patience can afford you in terms of quality. With a beautiful copper colour, the Mortlach 20 introduces the gourmand to a densely rich aroma, filled with earthy tones and meaty elements. There's a hint of leather oil and wood resin, a distinctive trait of mature whiskies. Bringing maturity into focus, the Mortlach 20 also brings overripe fruits, spices, and a hint of espresso into the foreground of your palate.
